Joseph was born circa 1613 in Cholesbury, Buckinghamshire, England. Joseph married Hannah Whitlock, daughter of John Whitlock, on 10 November 1636 in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England.2 Circa 1638, Joseph and his wife, Hannah, immigrated from Buckinghamshire, England, to New England. They settled in Milford, Connecticut. As one of the settlers of Milford, Connecticut in 1639. His name appears November 20 of that year on the list of Free Planters. He & his wife, Hannah joined & were baptized at the church at Milford 23 June 1644. He was given lot no. 52 which consisted of 2 acres, 1 rod, and 20 poles near where the present railroad passes over West Town Street.3 Hannah was admitted to the Milford Church on 24 June 1644, and Joseph was admitted on the 28 June 1644. Their first four children were bapized at about this same time.4 Joseph's wife, Hannah, died on 15 April 1661 in Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut, leaving him a widower. In 1663, Joseph removed to Hadley, Massachusetts where he was made a freeman 1666. Joseph married 2nd Isabella Ward after 1663 in Hadley, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. Isabella was married 1st to John Catlin, by whom she had at least one child, John, and 2nd to James Northam.5,6,7 Joseph's wife, Isabella, died on 8 December 1676 in Hadley, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, leaving him a widower. Joseph married 3rd Elizabeth Gibbons between 8 December 1676 and 17 September 1678 in Hadley, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.8 Joseph made his will on 20 December 1680 at Hadley, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.
In th name of God Amen the twentieth day of December one thousand Six hundred and Eightie I Joseph Baldwin Senior of Hadley in the Countie of Hampshire within the Colony of the Massachusetts being together with my age of life now sick and weake of body but of good & Perfect memory thanks and praises be to almighty God for it & calling to Rememance of the transitory life & that all flesh must yield to death when it shall please God to call, doe make Consetitute Ordaine & declare this my last will & Testament in manner and forme following, revoking & adnulling by these present all and every testament or __________ Will or Wills heretofore by me made & declared either by word or _______and this to betaken as my last will and testament and no other – Amd first being penetant & Sorry from the bottom of my heart for my sins psdt ,odt Humbly desiring forgiveness for the same, I give & commit my Soule to almightie God my Savior & redeemer in whom& by ye might of Jesus I trust & believe ________ to be Saved & to have full remission and forgiveness of all my siins & that my Soule with my body at the General day of Resurrection shall rise again with joy And through ye merritts of Christ’s death & passion possess & inherit ye Kingdom of Heaven prepared for his Elect & Chosen & my body to be decently buried where it shall please my executors & to appoint and now for the settling of my Estate of Outward things as goods Chattles & debts as it hath pleased God from above my gifts to bestow upon me I order give & bestow ye same in forme & manner following.
I will that all my debts & dutys as I owe in Right or Conscience to any manner of person or persons whatsoever shall be well & Truely contented & payd on or deemed to be payd as is Convenient tyme after my decease by my executors hereafter named.
I do give and bequeath to my loving wife ye use or income or benefit of my housing and Lands in Hadley viz excepting the half part of my Lands I have formerly made over to my Son Joseph Baldwin & my intent is the other half part shall be to the use of my wife as aforesaid together with the use of my housing & moveables & this to be to her only for the te of he natyrall life for her comfort & Maintenance therein; keeping it in repaires & soe declining or resigning them to my Exectors hereafter named
I give and bequeath to my Loveing Son Joseph Baldwin besides or together ____the half of my Lands I have formerly made over unto him with the other half of my Lands in Hadley and this to be ___ it is my intention that he is not to enjoy or make claim to the above premises or any part of the same until after the decease of my self and wife I now have, she being to have ye use of the premises for her life or the tyme of her living after my self as is before presented – My son Joseph Baldwin ____ paying out o my Estate or Otherwise the Sum of fifie pounds in such Legacies as I Shall hereafter appoint – I doe give and bequeath ot my loving daughter Hannah Hull of New Haven Six pounds & to her daughter Mary Hull five pounds as she comes to the age of Eighteen years. – I do give and bequeath to my daughter Mary Catlin of Author Hill fortie shillings – I do give an bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth Wammer of Springfield seventeen pounds – I do give and bequeath to my daughter Sarah Bartlett of Northampton ten pounds – I do give and bequeath ro my daughter Hawkes deceased to her children viz John Hawks five pounds & Hannah Hawks five pounds when they come to age. – I do hereby further confirm unto my tree sons, Benjamin, Jonathan & David any former gift unto them or any one of them to be unto them & their heirs forever viz of that Estate formerly my right in Milford – It is my intent ye as to these Legacies I have & do appointe by this my last will to b payd by my executor to my aforesaid children & grandchildren shall not claimed of them nor any of them till after the decease of my wife & my aforesaid estate fall by right to my Executor – I do hereby Ordaine & constitute my loveing son Joseph Baldwin my Sole Executor to this my Last Will and Testament & accordingly to dispose & order my Estate as is above expressed. - - Witnesses: Chiliab Smith & Samuel Partrigg.9,10
He wrote a codicil to his will on 30 October 1684.
October 30th 1684 This day Joseph Baldwin Son having further considerance my aforesaid Last Will & testament & doe Ratifie confirm my former act therein with these provisions following – that is that in sayd will I have bequeathed the use of my houses & homestead in Hadley to my Loveing wife for the term of her natural life it is now to be understood to enjoy it only for the term of her natural life or widowhood in case she marrie I having before ye aforesaid ________ was made at her marriages past sayd houses & homestead to my son Joseph Baldwin & to his heirs and by_______under my hand as also whereas in ye above. My Son Joseph Baldwin now deceased was ordained Sole Executor to sayd Agreemenr or will and therefore I now constitutr an appoint my grandson or Son Joseph Baldwin Jr to be my sole executor of this the above written will as also I do appoint and intreat my loving friends Lt. Phillip Smith & Samuel Partrigg to oversee together with my Eecutor and to see this my Last Will performed to which I subscribed & confirme as an addition to th above sayd and no otherwise as Witnesses my hand & Seale Chiliab Smith & Samuel Partrigg.10
Joseph departed this life on Thursday, 2 November 1684 in Hadley, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.11 He was buried at Hadley, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, in the Old Hadley Cemetery.12 His will was probated on 8 November 1684. The inventory of Joseph's estate was taken on Wednesday, 8 November 1684. The inventory was taken by Chiliab Smith & Samuel Partrigg and the value was determined to be £154 14s. 4d.
Many of the prominent Baldwins of Milford are his descendants, and have had considerable influence in Milford's prosperity. Nathan A. Baldwin and Albert A. Baldwin have paid out millions to their operatives, and at this writing give employment to a large number. Joseph's house lot was next to that of Nicholas Camp (22), and some of his descendants are now living on it. His son David married Mary, daughter of Ensign John Stream (23), and those now in Milford come from this marriage.

, In 1888, in celebration of its 250th Anniversary, the towns people of Milford had a bridge & tower of stone errected over the river upon whose banks the first habitations were placed and near the spot where the first mill was erected.
Along the sides of the bridge individual memorial stones where placed honoring the original settlers and prominent persons in the history of Milford. The tower, bridge and memorials were dedicated on 28 August 1889.
