Thomas was born in Bartlow, Cambridgeshire, England. On 13 August 1592, he was christened in Bartlow, Cambridgeshire, England, at Parish Church of Bartlow.1 He was apprenticed to John Pearch, a haberdasher of London on 1 dec 1607. He remained in London for the remainder of his life. Thomas made his will on 4 August 1634.
The will of Thomas Slany of London, haberdasher states that “all my goods & chattels & personal estate shall according to the Custome of the Cittie of Lonon be divided into three equall parts One Third parte whereof I give & bequeath to Elizabeth my wife according to the said custome One other third parte thereof I give and bequeath to my five children Mary John Lidia Sara & Elizabeth according to the said Custome And the other Third part thereof which is in my own power to dispose of I give and bequeath as followeth, That is to say sister Bazies three Children Five pounds apiece the said Legacies to be payd to Barnaby Bowtell of Dedham for their use & hee to dispose of the same A the Children & for them as hee shall see cause And in the meane tyme to manage it for their best Advantage But if their Legacies be unpaid to them or any of them at their deceases or decease of any of them Then his or her legacies soe deceaseing shalbe retorned by the said Barnaby to my executrix – Item I give to Joseph my sister Holmsteds youngest sonne five pounds to be payd to Mr. Statham of Tarling for his use & to bestow it on the said Joseph as hee shall see cause – Item I give to my neece Sara Holmsted Thirty shillings To my nephew Richard Holmesteed Fower nobles to my servant John Gunnock Three pounds And my servant Richafrd Fassett fower pounds Soe that my said servants be readie at all tymes upon request of my Executrix to assist my Executrix in gathering in such debts as are oweing to me & improving of the said debts.
His will was probated on 23 July 1638.
