Nicholas was born circa 1796 in Rockingham County, Virginia. He never married. To earn a living, he would buy horses in Ohio and take them to Virginia through the mountains to sell them. He would make a great profit on the sale of these horses. He would often sell them on time to old friends there. In 1848, being owed a large amount of money, he left home on foot to travel some 500 miles through the mountains to Virginia to collect this money. His family & friends warned him not to take this venture as they feared he would be killed for his money. Their fears were probably met as he never returned home.
