Thomas was born in Hertfordshire, England. He was an early settler of Hartford, and an original settler of Farmington in 1640. Thomas married Rebecca Olmsted, daughter of Richard Olmsted I and Frances Slany, in 1642 in Farmington, Hartford County, Connecticut, at First Church of Christ. He was admitted to thr church in Farmington on 30 January 1652. Thomas departed this life on Tuesday, 13 September 1689 in Farmington, Hartford County, Connecticut.4 Letters of Administration of his estate were granted on 6 November 1689 To his widow, Rebecca, and his son Samuel. John Stanley and Samuel Cowles were appointed as overseers. this also included a list of the children of the deceased: John Newell 42, Thomas 39, Samuel 28, Rebecca Woodford 46, Mary Bascom 44, Hester Stanley 37, Sarah Smith 34 & Hannah North 31.. The inventory of Thomas's estate was taken on Monday, 7 November 1689 by John Stanley and Samuel Cowles. They appraised the estate to be valued at £449 17s. 6d. His will was probated on 8 November 1689.
Whereas, Thomas Newell of Farmington, lately deceased, died without any will, it is mutually agreed between the Widow of the sd. Newell & all the Children that were present at the County Court: when the Dist. of Thomas Newell’s Estate was made: The Widow & Relict of the sd. Thoams Newell reserveth the full dispose of her thirds of all the Moveable Estate for her maintenance. It is also agreed by the Widow & Children that Rebecca Woodford, gr Child of the forementioned Thomas Newell that hath lived several years with her gr. Father & Mother, shall have £10 in Moveable Estate given her out of her gr. Father’s Estate before any other Dist. be made. We have given into the Worshipfull Court the several sums that each of the Children have already received, as near as we can, intreating them to make an equal Dist. of the forementioned Estate according to our Agreement. Unto all which we have set to our Hand.s & Seal this 8th of November, 1689.
