Samuel Mott was born on Monday, 27 March 1820 in Manhattan, New York County, New York, at the family home at 307 Pearl Street. Samuel married Julia Coles on 2 September 1844 at the home of Dr. J. Noyes on 78th Street in the City, County & State of New York.4 Samuel & Julia had children: Oscar Coles [6/06/1845- ] [m. 8/19/1868 Addie V. Bird [11/08/1851] [no issue], Julia Coles [9/18/1847- ] [m. 4/15/1873 Alvan Hedden Whitehead s/o Almeron Whitehead & Mary Ann Maise [m. 12/25/1833 New York]. They had children: Deborah [10/08/1876-10/01/1966] [m. 6/30/1902 in Lansing, Michigan John J. Gafill Jr.], Raymond [1/06/1874-11/23/1916], Hattie Hurd [7/04/1883-7/12/1961] [m. 2/01/1908 Archie Crouston Utter]. The Utter's lived at 872 Southfield, Birmingham, Michigan. The Gafill's also lived on Southfield next to Rice & Lucile [Leggett] Howell. 11 September 1850, Samuel and Julia listed on the U.S. Federal Census in the City, County & State of New York. Enumerated in this household were Samuel M. Leggett [30 New York - merchant], his wife: Julia [31 New York], Oscar [5 New York], Loisa [3 New York], Leviret Coles [24 New York] and 5 servants. He was worth $10,000.5 Samuel's wife, Julia, died on 4 November 1850 leaving him a widower. Samuel married 2nd Deborah Phelps on 23 December 1852 in Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan, at the home of Alfred Williams. By Rev. Oliver Taylor.6 Samuel & Deborah had children: Ada Louise [3/10/1854- ] [m. 6/17/1875 Edward Chester Smith [10/01/1845] [s/o Edward Chester & Julia Phoenix (Talbot) Smith] & Alfred Augustus [1/01/1857-11/07/1875][single]. 12 July 1860, Samuel was listed on the U.S. Federal Census. Enumerated in this household were Samul Leggett [40 New York], his wife: Deborah [30 New York], Oscar [16 New York], Julia [13 New York], Ada [6 Michigan] & Alfred [3 Michigan].7 23 August 1870, Samuel was listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Commerce Township, Oakland County, Michigan. Enumerated in this household were Samuel Legget [50 New York-farmer], his wife: Deborah [40 New York], Julia C. [23 New York], Addie L. [16 Michigan] & Alfred [13 Michigan]. Samuel's wife, Deborah, died on 25 May 1871 in Pontiac leaving him a widower. Samuel married 3rd Lucy A. Cowles on 19 March 1874. Samuel died on Tuesday, 24 July 1883 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, of softening of the brain.
Death of Samuel W. Leggett – Tuesday morning the telephone brought the sad news of the death of Samuel W. Leggett, at Detroit. For abut three months past Mr. L. had been ill, but was gaining steadily until Sunday noon when he had a stroke o paralyusis, from the effects of which he never recovered, passing away at three o’clock. Funeral services were held last Wednesday morning at the house 374 Cass Avenue, and the remains were brought to Pontiac for interment on thr noon train.Deceased was born in New York City received a liberal education, and graduated as a physician. After practicing a short time he came to Michigan and Pontiac, purchasing the property now owned by Judge Baldwin, on Saginaw Avenue. In a year or two he considered to give up the practice of medicine and bought a farm in Commerce where he lived many years, and finally returned to this city. Mr. L. always kept himself well informed upon the topics of the day, moved in the best of society, was a first-class conversationalist, and made friends on every hand. He was also a man of more than ordinary literary ability, and author of many excellent pieces of poetry and prose. Having plenty of this world’s goods, Mr. L. remembered his less fortunate neighbors. He was a great lover of out-dooe sports and amusements, one of the original members of the Detroit Fishing Club, and at the time of his death President of the Pontiac Fishing Club. Mr. Leggett was in his 63rd year and his death is mourned by a host of relatives and friends – Bill Porter.8
He was buried at Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan, in the Oak Hill Cemetery. The inscription on his tombstone reads: Samuel M. Leggett Died July 24, 1883 - Aged 63 yeaers.9,10

Oscar Coles Leggett, who is married to Addie Bird Leggett, and who both reside at Number 140 East Creighton Avenue, Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Julia Coles Whitehead, who resides at Number 57 Smith Avenue, Detroit, Michigan; and Ada L. Smith, who died October 19th, 1909, leaving a last will and two codicils thereto which were duly admitted to probate January 29th, 1910, in the Probate Court of Oakland County, Michigan, under the terms of which said will and codicils she devised all her residuary estate remaining after the payment of certain specific legacies, to her husband, Edward C. Smith for and during his natural life, and on his death to her children then living and to the issue of any deceased child or childrenl That said Ada L. Smith was survived by her said husband, who resides at Pontiac, Michigan, and by the following children and grandchildren:
Edward C. Smith, Jr., a son, who is married to Mabel Thorpe Smith, and they with their two children, Edward Chester Smith, Third, and Mabel Elmira Smith, both infants under the age of fourteen years, reside at No. 723 Beach Street, Flint, Michigan.
Tracy S. Smith, a son, who is married to Alice Hadsell Smith, and they with their children Charles Hadsell Smith and Tracy Scoville Smith, both infants under the age of fourteen years, reside at No. 1299 John R. Street, Detroit, Michigan.
Alfred L. Smith, a son, who is married to Grace Stowell Smith, and they reside at Wakefield, Michigan and have no children.
Talbot T. Smith, a son, who is unmarried and resides at No. 723 Beach Street, Flint, Michigan.
Louise Hildner, a daughter, who is the wife of Ernest G. Hildner and they with their children Ernest G. Hildner, Jr., Edward S. Hildner, John G. Hildner and Alfred Leggett Hildner, all infants under the age of fourteen years, reside at No. 303 South Hart Street, Princeton, Indiana.
