Julia was born in 1819 in New York. Julia married Samuel Mott Leggett, son of William Haight Leggett and Margaret Peck Wright, on 2 September 1844 at the home of Dr. J. Noyes on 78th Street in the City, County & State of New York.1 Samuel & Julia had children: Oscar Coles [6/06/1845- ] [m. 8/19/1868 Addie V. Bird [11/08/1851] [no issue], Julia Coles [9/18/1847- ] [m. 4/15/1873 Alvan Hedden Whitehead s/o Almeron Whitehead & Mary Ann Maise [m. 12/25/1833 New York]. They had children: Deborah [10/08/1876-10/01/1966] [m. 6/30/1902 in Lansing, Michigan John J. Gafill Jr.], Raymond [1/06/1874-11/23/1916], Hattie Hurd [7/04/1883-7/12/1961] [m. 2/01/1908 Archie Crouston Utter]. The Utter's lived at 872 Southfield, Birmingham, Michigan. The Gafill's also lived on Southfield next to Rice & Lucile [Leggett] Howell. 11 September 1850, Samuel and Julia was listed on the U.S. Federal Census in the City, County & State of New York. Enumerated in this household were Samuel M. Leggett [30 New York - merchant], his wife: Julia [31 New York], Oscar [5 New York], Loisa [3 New York], Leviret Coles [24 New York] and 5 servants. He was worth $10,000.2 Julia departed this life on Monday, 4 November 1850 at age 31 years. She was buried at Brooklyn, New York, in Green-Wood Cemetery.3
