John Whitlock1

M, b. circa 1585
John was born circa 1585 in Cholesbury, Buckinghamshire, England.

Important Notes: Many researchers have indicated the parents of Hannah Whitlock to be John Whitlock, born 1585, in Buckinghamshire, England and dying in 1658 in Fairfield, Connecticut. He married Sarah Hirsch, who was born circa 1687 in Buckinghamshire, England and dying 1661 in Fairfield, Connecticut. They had children; John, Hannah and Rose. It should be noted that this information is incorrect. Hannah's father, may indeed be John Whitlock born 1585. It was his son John Jr. who died in Fairfield in 1658. John Jr. was married to Sarah who died in 1661. As far as is known, Sarah's ,maiden name is not known. As for Sarah Hirsch, we find no record. It is possible that someone has located her and she could be the wife of either John Sr. or John Jr.

  1. [S506] Note: For some years we have shown that John Whitlock who died in 1659 in CT could possibly have been married to Sarah Hirsch. There are now indications that the Baldwin and maybe Hirsch family came from Cholesbury in Buckinghamshire. Listed before is a an article from the December 2005 issue of the Whitlock Family Newsletter. If any knows of possible Hirsch/Whitlock connections in the 1600's in Connecticut, I would be interested to hear from you.

    WHITLOCKS OF CHOLESBURY, BUCKINGHAMSHIRE

In her email of September 2, 2005, Janne Carter says:

"David and I went to Buckinghamshire Archives yesterday. It was not very fruitful, I'm afraid.
This is what we have found absolute proof of, from the actual parish records.

A John Whitlock was born in Princes Risborough in 1562.
A John Whitlock was born in Cholesbury in 1585 (probably his son, but no wife or mother's name available in either case) He is the one who died in CT.
A John Whitlock was born in Cholesbury 1624( probably son of the second John. He is probably the younger brother to Hannah and David.) We found no marriage registration for either John"

This information has the potential of being the biggest break through we have had in years. If this information is the missing connection back to England for the Whitlocks of Connecticut (WHITLOCK09 chart) then the John Whitlock born in 1624 is more likely the John Whitlock who died in 1659 as we know this John was quite young when he died and the John Whitlock born in 1585 would be too old.

This find has even more likely connections to two other charts. We know Hannah Whitlock was married in 1636 to Joseph Baldwin (WHITLOCK31 chart) at High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire and therefore Hannah was likely from Buckinghamshire and possibly a daughter of the John Whitlock born in 1585. Hannah and Joseph settled in Hadley, Massachusetts. I have other documents that indicate that Joseph Baldwin was born in Cholesbury which makes this connection even more likely.

Lastly there is the Rose Whitlock who married Abraham Parker in 1644 in Woburn, Massachusetts (WHITLOCK24 chart). A Rose Whitlock and a John Whitlock are shown together in Salem, Massachusetts in 1643 but not as husband and wife, and we have assumed that this John was the one who died in Connecticut in 1659. This puts John, Hannah and Rose all in Massachusetts in the 1640's, all born between 1613 and 1624 and at least John and Rose being shown as having some connection to each other.

While I think the connection to John Whitlock of Princes Risborough is possible, I am leaving that aside for the time being. If this speculation turns out to have substance, this would mean the descent could be as follows:

F1)John WHITLOCK b.1585 Cholesbury, Buckinghamshire, England
    -M- ??
G1)Hannah WHITLOCK b.1613? Cholesbury, Buckinghamshire, England? d.Feb.27,1661 Milford, Connecticut, U.S.A.
    -M-Joseph BALDWIN b.1609 d.Nov.2,1684(See WHITLOCK31 chart)
    Nov.10,1636 High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England
    G2)David WHITLOCK
    -M-Ann (??)BIGGE
    Dec.29,1634 High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England
    G3)Rose WHITLOCK b.1623-25? d.Nov.30,1691
    -M-Abraham PARKER b.1612? d.Aug.12,1685(See WHITLOCK24 chart)
    Nov.18,1644 Woburn, Massachusetts, U.S.A.
    G4)John WHITLOCK b.1624 Cholesbury, Buckinghamshire, England d.1659 Connecticut, U.S.A.
    -M- ?? d.1661? (Possibly Sarah HIRSCH)(See WHITLOCK09 chart)

I think this information from Cholesbury, Buckinghamshire is worth further research and hopefully Janne Carter will eventually be able to acquire copies of the material she consulted. Buckinghamshire is not well documented in our files and this is likely why this connection has eluded us for all these years. Hopefully there will be land records or Manorial files that can shed more light on this family.

It is interesting that Bulstrode Whitelocke's parents James Whitlock and Elizabeth Bulstrode were married in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire in 1602 (WHITLOCK02H chart). At least two of their children were born in the county, Mary in 1606 and Joan in 1609. In this case it was the Bulstrodes who were from Buckinghamshire, not the Whitlocks, who were from London by that time. James does not purchase Fawley Court in Buckinghamshire until 1617. There is nothing I have found that would hint at a connection between these two families.

Our thanks to Janne Carter for sharing this find with us and I look forward to following this line of research as it progresses. I have noted this possible connection on the WHITLOCK09 chart with references on the WHITLOCK24 and WHITLOCK31 charts. I will be interested in comments from descendants of these families.
