Thomas married Sarah Elwell, daughter of Thomas Elwell and Sarah Bassett, on 10 May 1695 in East Greenwich, Kent County, Rhode Island.3 By January 1718, Thomas had moved his family from Providence, Rhode Island to Salem County, New Jersey. Thomas and Sarah had children: Abigail [circa 1697], Thomas [2/08/1699], John [6/20/1700], William [11/21/1701], Mary [0/08/1703], James [4/02/1705], Samuel [3/14/1707], Elisha [7/26/1708] [m. Joseph and Susannah built a log cabin in the wilderness and were the first white settlers in the area to become the village of Hamburg, Sussex County. The cabin was built in 1740 on the banks of the Wallkill River. For a time, this small village was called Wallings in honor of Joseph. In 1750, the cabin was replaced by a large frame house and was licensed as an inn. For over one hundred years, the inn was a landmark for the area. Thomas departed this life in Salem County, New Jersey. His will was probated on 22 October 1724.
