The family was registered as an early settler of New York at the Old School Baptist Church at Howells.2 Selah was born on Friday, 24 May 1765 in Howells Depot, the town of Wallkill, Orange County, New York. Selah married Dinah Riley on 20 April 1787 in New York.2 Selah & Dinah had children: Priscilla [11/23/1788], Mary [7/19/1790], Keziah [8/11/1794], Sarah [10/28/1796], Fanny [9/22/1798], Samuel [8/26/1800], James Robins [6/08/1803] & Selah Riley [6/11/1805]. The 1790 U.S. Federal Census enumerates at the Town of Wallkill, Orange County, New York, the family of Selah Mapes [11:3].3 The 1810 U.S. Federal Census enumerates at the Town of Wallkill the family of Selah Mapes [30101:02210].4 The 1820 U.S. Federal Census enumerates at the Town of Wallkill the family of Selah Mapes [102301:00011].5 The 1830 U.S. Federal Census enumerates at the Town of Wallkill the family of Selah [00011001:1010101].6 Selah's wife, Dinah, died on 11 July 1835 in the town of Mount Hope, Orange County, New York, leaving him a widower. Selah departed this life on Wednesday, 8 March 1837 in the town of Mount Hope at age 71 years, 9 months and 12 days. He was buried there in the old Congregational Church Cemetery. The church is commonly known as the Yellow Church, near Mount Hope, Orange Co., N. Y.7

On Apr. 20, 1787 he married Dinah Riley who was born Dec. 3, 1765 and died July 11, 1835. They were buried in the cemetery of the "Congregational Church at Wallkill and Deerpark Patent", later changed to the "Congregational Church of Mount Hope" (commonly known as the Yellow Church, near Mount Hope, Orange Co., N.
