     Moses was born on Wednesday, 1 November 1797 in Howells Depot, the town of Wallkill, Orange County, New York. Moses married Harriett Carpenter on 14 October 1818 in Orange County, New York. Moses & Harriett had children: Mary [7/13/1819], Elvira [7/02/1821-10/19/1828], Robert Fulton [2/13/1824-6/29/1844], Benjamin Franklin [10/01/1825]. Moses's wife, Harriett, died on 23 August 1828 in Middletown, Orange County, New York, leaving him a widower. Moses married 2nd Mary Sherwood on 31 March 1830 in Orange County, New York. Moses & Mary had a son, Jehiel [9/23/1833-9/23/1833]. Moses departed this life on Tuesday, 6 October 1840 in Middletown at age 42 years, 11 months and 5 days. He was buried there in the Hillside Cemetery.3

On Oct. 14, 1818 he married Harriet Carpenter, daughter of Jesse Carpenter and Mary Mapes. She was born Sept. 18, 1795 and died Aug. 23, 1828. They were buried in Hillside Cemetery, Middletcwn, N.Y. On Mar. 31, 1830 Moses Mapes married Mary Sherwood, daughter of Jehiel Sher-wood and Asenath Miller. She was born Sept. 8, 1802. The date of her death is not
    known but in 1858 she was a member of the Monticello Presbyterian Church. Their children were: 1st wife: Mary Mapes b. July 13, 1819, Elvira Mapes b. July 2, 1821 d. Oct. 19, 1828,
