     James was born on Wednesday, 26 December 1787 in Howells Depot, the town of Wallkill, Orange County, New York. James married Susan Hulse circa 1810 in New York. James & Susan had children: Brewster Tuthill [6/02/1811-9/25/1886] [m. Catherine McBride], Whitehead Halstead [8/29/1812], Louise Ann [2/14/1814][never married], Harriet Eliza [8/31/1816][never married], Elizabeth Hulse [1/16/1819], Mary Ann 1/31/1821, Juliette [12/05/1822-1912] [m. Edward Tuthill], James Lafayette 10/02/1824, & William Jackson [8/07/1828]. He was a Corporal in 1st Regiment, Belknap's New York Militia, War of 1812.

Enumerated in this household were James Mapes [62 New York], his wife: Susan [63 New York], William L. Webb [40 New York-wagon maker], Hugn Corrigan [45 New York-laborer], Catherine Naiture [16 New York], Helen A. Smith [11 New York], & Mary E. Smith [6 New York]. James is a farmer.5 11 June 1860, James was listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Hamptonburg Township, Orange County, New York. Enumerated in this household were James Mapes [72 New York], Mafy E. Smith [16 New York], Whitehead H. Mapes [47 New York], Mary A. [38 New York], Emily [17 New York], Harriotte E. [16 New York], Susan [14 New York], Celia [10 New York], Mary I. [7 New York], & George W. [6 New York].6 James departed this life on Saturday, 9 January 1869 in Hamptonburg Township at age 81 years and 14 days. According to the First Presbyterian Church there in Hamptonburg, he died of jaundice. He was buried at Washingtonville, Orange County, New York, in Washingtonville Cemetery. The inscription on his tombstone reads: JAMES MAPES - Born dec. 26, 1787 - Died Jan. 28 1869 - Aged 80 yrs & 14 days.7
