     Hanley Smith was born on Friday, 31 December 1756 in Blooming Grove, Orange County, New York. He served in the McClaughry's Regiment, Militia during the American Revolution He joined together with his fagther. Smith was promoted to Corporal. Hanley married Rachael McKnight on 10 October 1779 in Goshen, Orange County, New York. Smith & Rachael had children: Samuel [10/16/1780] Elizabeth [5/18/1785], Jesse [7/07/1788], Ira [9/04/1790], William Warrington [8/17/1792], Thomas [7/17/1894], Erastus [7/12/1797], Mary [6/16/1801] & Isaac [10/16/1803]. The 1790 U.S. Federal Census enumerates at the Town of Wallkill, Orange County, New York, the family of Smith Mapes [13:2].2 The 1800 U.S. Federal Census enumerates at Canisteo, Steuben County, New York, the family of Smith Mapes [0221:0011].3 Soon after being in the 1800 census in Canisteo, the moved on to Yate County, adjacent to the north, where they are listed as early settlers of New York in Benton Center church records. By 1810 they had moved on again, this time to Ontario county, adjacent to the north of Yate County. The 1810 U.S. Federal Census enumerates at Boyle Township, Ontario County, New York, the family of Smith Mapes [01301:10001].4 By 1830, the family had again moved to the north, to Monroe County, adjacent to the north of of Ontario County. Smith departed this life on Monday, 10 May 1830 in Rochester, Monroe County, New York, at age 73 years, 4 months and 10 days.

  1. [S76] Frank Mapes Ham, Mapes Family of America, page 167 - SMITH MAPES was born at Blooming Grove, Orange County, N. Y. on Dec. 31, 1756. He was one of the signers of the Revolutionary Pledge. On Oct. 10, 1779 he married Rachel McKnight. The 1790 Census shows him in the Town of Wallkill, then Ulster Co. now Orange County; the 1800 Census shows him in the Town of Frederickton, Steuben County, N. Y. There is no information at hand to show his later whereabouts or the time or place of his death. Their children were: i. Samuel Mapes b. Oct. 16, 1780, ii. Elizabeth Mapes May 18. 1785, Jesse Mapes b. July 7, 1788, Ira Mapes b. Sept. 4, 1790, William Warrington Mapes b. Aug. 17, 1792, Thomas Mapes b. July 17, 1894, Erastus Mapes b. July 12, 1797, Mary Mapes b. June 16, 1801, Isaac Mapes b. Oct. 16, 1803.
