Charles & Sarah had been married 38 years with 7 children 6 living. [Enum. Enumerated in this household were Cortland E. Sweet [36 Michigan], his wife: Susie S. [35 Michigan], children: Mapes D. [11 Michigan], Charles H. [3 Michigan], Bertus W. [1 1/2 Michigan], father-in-law: Charles D. Mapes [71 New York], & mother-in-law: Sarah [68 Michigan], Charles & Sarah had been married 48 years with 7 children 6 living. Obituary: Charles Dubois Mapes -- At midnight, November 2nd at his home in Iosco Township was ended the earthly career of one who had been prominent in the community for many years. Charles Dubois Mapes was born in Orange County N.Y., December 6th 1838. He came with his parents to Michigan in 1854 and settled on the farm which has been his home for sixty-five years.
He was married to Sarah M. Abbott January1, 1861. To them was born seven children. The first one, Adda, died in infancy … Four sons and two daughters are still living, as follows: George A, of Detroit; Samuel A., of Chelsea; Cyprenus A of Gregory; Fred of Jackson; Susie, the wife of Courtland Sweet, living in the old home, and Gladys, the wife of Prof. Wright of Ithaca N.Y. The funeral was held at the Plainfield Presbyterian Church on Nov 6th, Rev C.D. Ellis officiating.
Mr. Mapes had been a ruling elder of this church for many years and was always interested in its support and prominent in its activities. He was recognized as one who always stood for the best things. Honor characterized him in his business dealings. A model husband and father in his home life; a faithful worker in his church. The community was ennobled and enriched by his presence. Mrs. Mapes who survives her departed companion, has the love and sympathy of a wide circle of friends and acquaintances.7 He was buried at Unadilla Township, Livingston County, Michigan, in the Plainfield Village Cemetery.8,9
