James was born in 1695 in the Town of Southold, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. James married Anna Goldsmith on 3 December 1717 in the Town of Southold.2 James and Anna had children: Anna [7/01/1721-3/27/1722]. James departed this life on Sunday, 16 May 1762 in the Town of Southold at age 67 years. He was buried there in the First Presbyterian Church burying ground in the village of Southold. The inscription on his tombstone reads: In Memory of Deacon James Horton who died ye 16th A. D. 1762 in the 68 th year of his age - Intombed beneath this ponderous heaey Load - Lies the man who loved and feared the Lord - A Husband dear, a Friend ever kind; To Ministers a close and confident friend. - Sober, Blameless to Chairty inclined - Meriting well of All he left behind.3
