Phillippa (?)

     Phillippa was born circa 1600 in England. Phillippa married Dr. John Greene, son of Richard Greene and Mary Hooker, in 1646 in London, county Middlesex, England. Soon after the marriage the couple returned to Rhode Island and to the settlement at Warwick.¹ She adjusted well to the hardships in the New World, and wrote a letter to a friend still living in London which he enjoyed and shared with a mutual friend. In sharing the letter, he quoted Phillippa as follows: "she laies out the benefights of these parts better than I could have advised her to have done." he goes on to say that "She takes well to the country and cheerfully take her place, hath the love of all, non can open their mouth against her, which is a rare thing in these parts.² Phillippa's husband, an unknown person , died before 7 January 1659 in Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Island, leaving her a widow. In 1668, she deeded to her step-son, Major John Greene, all of her real property for its maintenance. This was an unusual transaction as it was carried out nearly 20 years before her death.² Phillippa departed this life on Tuesday, 11 March 1687 in Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Island.²
