William was born circa 1132 probably at Shropshire, England. He becomes Earl of Arundel. It is said that Henry II [1154-1189] gave Isavella, Baroness of Clune. in marriage to William firz Alan as his 2nd wife. She was the considered the greatest heiress of Shropshire. William married 2nd Isabella de Saye of Clun, daughter of Helias de Saye, circa 1160 in Shropshire, England. She married 2nd Geoffrey de Vere and 3rd William de Botreaux.
