     Charles was born on Sunday, 15 December 1641 in La Rochelle, Charente, Poitou-Charentes, France. He was christened there on 22 December 1641 in The Temple Calvinist.1 On 16 April 1658, he signed a contract to work for Jacques de la Potierie for a period of 3 years, receiving 30 livres at the end of the term. Soon after Charles left France with his mother and two sisters aboard the ship "Le Prince Guillaume" for Quebec.2 Before his marriage, he resided in Champlain. A contract for the marriage of Charles and Jeanne Rivard was signed on 22 April 1669. It was drawn up by the notary, Mr. Latouche. Charles was noted as being from the parish of St-Nicolas in La-Rochelle, now a resident of Champlain & his parents as Pierre Dutos & Jeanne Pairain. Jeanne was noted as a resident of Cap-de-la-Madeleine & her parents as Nicolas Rivart & Jeanne Destpaire. 1681, Charles and Jeanne were listed on the Canadian Census in Champlain, Les Chenaux County, Quebec, Canada. Enumerated in this household were Charles Duteau [39 years], Jeanne Rivart [36 years], Marie [6 years], Catherine [4 years] & Charlotte [2 years].3 Charles's wife, Jeanne, died circa 25 November 1698 in Champlain, leaving him a widower. Charles departed this life on Saturday, 12 June 1717 in Champlain at age 75 years, 5 months and 28 days. He was buried there in the churchyard of la Visitation on Sunday, 13 June 1717.4
