Thomas was born circa 1577 in Dedford in the parish of Bromsgrove, Worchestershire, England. He eventually became an apothacary and lived at the sign of the three Fawns in Old Bailey, London. Thomas married Anne Winthrop, daughter of Adam Winthrop III and Anne Browne, on 25 February 1604/5 in Groton Manor, County Suffolk, England.3 He had an Apothecary. The family resided in London, County Middlesex, England. Thomas's wife, Anne, died on 16 May 1618 in the family home at the sign of the three Fawns in Old Bailey, London, County Middlesex, England, leaving him a widower. Thomas married 2nd Priscilla Burgess on 28 August 1621 in London, County Middlesex, England. She was the widow of Bezeel Sherman, grocer of London who died 7 October 1618.4 Thomas was Lord of the Manor of Nusteed Hall, in Polsted, County Suffolk.5,6 Thomas made his will on 14 April 1629 at London, County Middlesex, England.7.
In the name of God, Amen - I, Thomas Fones, citizen and apothecary of London, being weak in body but of good and perfect memory thanks to the Almighty, do make my last will in manner following and having already by acts executed in my life time dispose of the greater part of my personal estate to and among my children and to the use and benefit of my wife. I do hereby comitt the tuition, education, care and tutelage of my son, Samuel Fones, during his minority unto his uncle, John Winthrop, of Groton in the county of Suffolk, Esquire, John White of the Middle Temple, London, Esquire and James Thurlby, citizen & grocer of London, and do earnestly desire them my loving friends to have a special care that he be brought up in learning and in the fear of God and knowledge of His ways, and do charge and require my son upon my blessing to submit himself unto them and to be ruled by them in all things. And the tuition and education of my daughters, Elizabeth and Martha, I do comit unto my said loving brother, John Winthrop, until they shall be married or obtain their full age of one and twenty years. And the tuition and education of my youngest daughter, Mary Fones, I comit unto my loving wife, her mother. And, I do make and ordain my said loving wife, Prisilla Fones. and my said loving brother, John Winthrop, the executors of this my last will and testament and do hereby revoke all former wills. In witness whereof, I have here unto put my hand and seal and published this to be my last will this 14th day of April in the fifth year of the reign of our sovereign lord, Charles by the grace of God, King of England, Scotland, France and Ireland, defender of the faith anno dimum 1629. Thomas departed this life on Sunday, 15 April 1629 in London, County Middlesex, England, at the family home at the sign of the three Fawns in Old Bailey. Quite possibly from the heartbreak he received after hearing from his daughter, Elisabeth, of her intention to marry her cousin, Henry Winthrop. His will was probated on 29 April 1629.

He married Feb 25, 1604 Anne, born Jan. 16, 1585, daughter of Adam Winthrop and sister of Governor John Winthrop of Mass. She died May 16, 1619, and was buried in St Sepulchre’s Church in London. He married second, Aug. 28, 1621, Pricilla, daughter of John Burgess, D.D., and widow of Bezeel Sherman, grocer, who died Oct. 7, 1618. She married third, Henry Painter of Exeter, a Westminister Divine. Issue by first wife: Elizabeth; Martha; Samuel. By second wife: Mary, Priscilla.

John Winthrop, in a letter, dated March 25, 1628/9, addressed to Mrs. Priscilla Fones, at her house in the Old Bailey, London, says "Pray tell my brother that his tenant Gage desires him to forbear him £10 till Whitsuntide." Winthrop's History of New England. Mrs. Priscilla Fones was the second wife of Thomas Fones, whose first wife was Anne, dau. of Adam Winthrop, and sister of Gov. Winthrop. He was a younger son of the family of Fones of Cornwall, an apothecary in London at the sign of the Three Fawns in the Old Bayley, and at the time of his death, April, 1629, was Lord of the Manor of Nusteed Hall in Polsted, co. Suffolk, and that is evidently where his "tenant Gage" lived ; perhaps William above.
