     William J. was born on Sunday, 30 April 1815 in Berne Township, Fairfield County, Ohio. William married Eliza Jacoby on 16 October 1844 in Wyandot County, Ohio. William & Eliza had children: Susan Clarinda [4/04/1847-8/29/1892][m. George Loomis], George W. [9/10/1849-9/23/1885][m. , William J. [11/02/1850-10/25/1865]. Henry F. [4/28/1853-1895][m. Sarah A. Henry], Harriett J. [11/28/1855], John S. [9/10/1856][m. Minnie M. Buck], Isaac Emanuel [4/01/1858-1/18/1878][m. Hattie Coldwell] & Eliza Ellen [3/05/1863-12/18/1887]. 6 August 1850, William and his wife, Eliza, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in McCutchinsville, Tymochtee Township, Wyandot County, Ohio. Enumerated in this household were William Beery [34 Ohio], his wife: Eliza [28 Ohio], children: Susan [3 Ohio] & George [10/12 Ohio].3 The family removed to Gratiot County, Michigan in 1866 and settled in Pine River Township, where they remained about two years. They returned then to Ohio, settling in Wyandot County where they spent the remainder of their lives. William was a minister. 30 July 1870, William and his wife, Eliza, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Tymochtee Township. Enumerated in this household were William Beery [55 Ohio], his wife: Eliza [48 Pennsylvania], children: George W. [20 Ohio], Susan [23 Ohio], Henry [17 Ohio], Harriett [15 Ohio], John [14 Ohio], Emanuel [12 Ohio], Eliza E. [8 Ohio], & Lettie [4 Ohio]. He is a farm laborer.4 William died on Friday, 18 January 1878 in Muir, Ionia County, Michigan, at age 62 years, 8 months and 19 days while on a ministerial tour. His body was taken back to Ohio. He was buried there in Bibler Cemetery.5

  1. [S51] Joseph H. Wenger, History of the Descendants of Nicholas Beery Born 1707. Immigrated from Switzerland to Pennsylvania in 1727, page 36 - William J. Beery, born in Fairfield County, Ohio, April 30, 1815. He came to Wyandot County, early in the thirties. October 16, 1844, he married Eliza Jacoby, a native of Pennsylvania. Mr Beery was of a reckless disposition. He reared a large family, many of whom were educated, intelligent and useful people. My Beery finally moved to Michigan, and died at Muir, in that state, on January 18, 1878. He was brought back to Wyandot County, Ohio and buried in the Bibler Cemetery. Mrs. Beery died near McCutchenville, Ohio, December 20, 1902, aged 82 years. She was a member of the M. E. Church. William J Beery was the ninth and youngest child of Jacob Beery and was of German ancestry. German was the language most spoken in the family. Their children were noted for their musical talent, with their father as leader, in the old-time “buckwheat” notes. Later in life he became a minister in the church of the River Brethren, often making ministerial tours in other states and localities, and on one of these tours he died while in Michigan. In 1831 Mr. Beery, at the age of 16 years, visited Wyandot County, Ohio, which was sixteen years before the Wyandot Indians left that reservation, where later he spent the greater portion of his life, and where McCutchenville is now located. BEERY, one of the prominent farmers and leading citizens of Pine River township, Gratiot county, resides upon the beautifully situated farm of eighty acres, which he has occupied since 1891. Mr. Beery is a fine type of the progressive; industrious and successful Michigan agriculturist, a class that reflects honor upon the State. He was born on a farm in Allen county, Ohio, September 10, 1856, son of William J. and Eliza E. ( Jacoby) Beery, natives of Pennsylvania.
    William J. Beery and his wife came to Gratiot county in 1866 and settled in Pine River township, where they remained about two years, returning then to Ohio and settling in Wyandotte county". This was their home locality for the remainder of their lives, Mrs. Beery dying December 20, 1903, in her eighty-second year, while Mr. Beery died at Muir, Michigan, January 18, 1878, in his sixty-second year. They had eight children, John S., being fifth in the order of birth. The others were : Susan C., deceased wife of George Loomis; George W., who died at the age of thirty-four; William, deceased at the age of fifteen years; Henry F., president of the Gold Miner Company, Dayton, Ohio; Hattie J., now Mrs. Howard McConahay; Isaac E., who died at the age of twenty-nine after a journalistic career in Nebraska and Ohio; and Miss Ella, who died aged twenty-five.
    John S. Beery remained at home until he was twenty-four years old, and then lolated in Gratiot county, where he was employed in the. pine woods during the winter months, and at farm labor in summer, continuing thus about three years. On November 30, 1884, Mr. Beery married Miss Minnie M. Buck, born January 10, 1867, in Medina county, Ohio, daughter of James and Hannah (Lewis) Buck, the latter of whom died in her sixty-first year, while the former still survives. Mrs. Beery was third in their family of five children, and to her and her husband have been born these children: Jesse L., James A., Roy Wayne, Zenith R., who died in infancy, and Austin E.
    After his marriage Mr. Beery purchased land in Pine River township, in 1891 buying the land which he now occupies. His eighty acres are well cultivated and are improved by modern and substantial buildings. Mr. Beery has held the office of justice of the peace for several years, has been health officer and held school offices in his township. He and his estimable wife are valued members of the Methodist Church.
    The ancestors of John S. Beery are traced to Switzerland, his great-great-grandfather and the founder of the American branch settling originally in New Jersey, migrating thence to Pennsylvania and Virginia, and .dying in the Old Dominion. The paternal great-grandfather, Nicholas Beery, was a native of Rockingham county, Virginia, passing the latter years of his life in Fairfield county, Ohio. His son, Jacob, the grandfather of John S., also of Rockingham county, Virginia, married Nancy Geil; in 1800 he removed to Fairfield county, Ohio, where he remained until his death, rearinq a family of nine children. The American records of the Beery family indicate .that among its members have been many well known preachers of the Dunkard and Mennonite sects. Another marked family trait is found in the Voice, which- is singularly Strong and melodious.
