     Emily Melissa was born in 1838 in Stockbridge Township, Ingham County, Michigan. She was the daughter of Samuel & Aurinda [West] Stocking of Stockbridge. She was often referred to as Melissa. Emily Melissa married Martin Badgley Townsend, son of Samuel Townsend and Asenath Badgley, on 8 December 1858 in Unadilla Township, Livingston County, Michigan. 4 June 1860, the U.S. Federal Census listed Emily, living in the home of his parents. Enumerated in this household were Samuel Townsend [61 New York], his wife: Asemath [61 New York], children: Lydia [28 New York], Martin B. [24 New York], Robert J. [22 Michigan], Martin's wife, Melissa [22 Michigan], granddaughter, Flora [9/12 Michigan], Maria Barber [12 Michigan], & Samuel Crafts [6 Michigan]. His property was valued at $5,000 and his personal property at $1,000.1 17 August 1870, Martin and Melissa listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Unadilla Township, Livingston County, Michigan. Enumerated in this household were Martin Townsend [34 Michigan-farmer], his wife: Malissa [32 Michigan], children: Flora [10 Michigan], Isabell [8 Michigan], Adell [8 Michigan], George M. [6 Michigan], & Edwin [2 Michigan].2 Emily's husband, Martin, died on 24 April 1883 in Stockbridge Township, Ingham County, Michigan, leaving her a widow.3 She was buried at Unadilla Township, Livingston County, Michigan, in the Plainfield Village Cemetery.4 Emily departed this life in 1927 in Unadilla Township, Livingston County, Michigan.
