     Stephen was born in 1730 in the Town of Flushing, Queens County, Long Island, New York. His father died when he was only two years old & his mother a few months earlier. His father left the care of him & his siblings to his cousin, Isaac Thorne & his wife, Hannah Haight. Isaac removed the family to Dutchess County where he was a very prominent man. Stephen married circa 1753 in New York. The name of his wife is not known.4 The 1790 U.S. Federal Census enumerates at Kinderhook Town, Columbia County, New York, the family of Stephen Badgley [23:3].5 Stephen made his will on 20 March 1797 at Columbia County, New York. A transcribed copy of his will is found in the Surrogate's Court: Book B, page 61. The book is in extremely poor condition & extremely difficult to read. In it, Stephen mentions: Samuel whom he leaves 5 shillings, Elizabeth 5 pounds, Hannah, Sarah, Phebe, Anna, Abigail - her portion to be divided equally among her two sons, John, Anthony. He makes his two sons: John & Joseph his executors. There was no mention of his wife. Witnesses: Joseph Smith, Allen Smith, Jacob Stever.6 Stephen departed this life before 7 May 1800 in Chatham, Columbia County, New York. His will was probated on 7 May 1800.

Many note this on the web but so far we have found no one with proof other that saying it was on ancestry.com. The name of "Abia" does not appear among Stephen's children or grandchildren.
