John was born in Dethick in the parish of Ashover, Derbyshire, England. John married Isabella Bradbourne, daughter of Henry Bradbourne and Margery Bagot, in England. He and Isabella were blessed with 2 sons and 6 daughters. He was a knight of Dethick and Kingston & was sheriff of the counties of Derby and Nottingham in 1480. In 1485, he was slain in the battle of Bosworth by James Blount, provost-marsha.

- [S918] Charles Cox, Noteson the Churches of Derbyshire, page 26 - Thomas and Isabella had issue two sons, the eldest of whom, Sir John Babington, married Isabella, daughter of Henry Braclburne, of Bradburne and the Hough. A window to his memory is noted under the account of Staveley Church, and there is a tomb to his wife at Ratcliff-on-Soar. They had issue two sons and six daughters, one of whom, Anna, has already been mentioned as the wife of James Rolleston. The eldest son was Thomas Babington.
