John was born circa 1560 in Thorton-in-Bradfordale, Yorkshire, England. During Michaelmas of 1585, John & his brother, Christopher, obtained one messuage with land from their brother, Thomas. Some time after Michaelmas of 1585, it is on record that John relinquished his shares in the messauges in Thorton-in-Bradfordale to his brother, Christopher. He resided for a time in Clayton. During the Michaelmas Term of 1594, Edward Hemyingway obtained from John Mitchell two messuages of land in Clayton.
