25 August 1870, Samuel and his wife, Mary were listed on the U.S. Federal Census living in the home of their son at Iosco Township, Livingston County, Michigan. Enumerated in this household were Horace Mapes [38 New York], his wife: Mary J. [35 Michigan], children: Willie H. [15 Michigan], Alice J. [14 Michigan], farm laborer: George Hudson [24 England], father: Samuel Mapes [60 New York], mother: Mary J. [57 New York], grandmotheHor: Catherine Greenleaf [79 New York][retired].6 He made his will 3 February 1877 at Iosco Township, Livingston County, Michigan. He leaves to sons: John E., Charles D. & Horace Mapes. Samuel died on Wednesday, 17 October 1877 in Iosco Township, Livingston County, Michigan, of quick consumption.7 He was buried in Unadilla Township, Livingston County, Michigan, in the Plainfield Village Cemetery.8,9
