Ester Smith1,2

     Ester was born circa 1663 in Town of Hempstead, Long Island, New Netherlands. She was a quaker. She was the daughter of Abraham Smith. Ester married "Mill" John Townsend, son of Henry Townsend I and Anne Coles, after 6 October 1680 in the Town of Oyster Bay, Queens County, Long Island, New York. "Mill" John was the towns surveyor at Oyster Bay from 1686 until his death. He purchased his brother's share of his father's mill and operated it for many years. Ester was known to be a short, stout woman. She was a woman of remarkable energy and business talent. Ester's husband, John, died on 9 May 1705 in the Town of Oyster Bay leaving her a widow. Ester departed this life after 1749 in the Town of Oyster Bay, Queens County, Long Island, New York.
