Lindley M. Ferris

     Lindley was born the 15th day of the 11th month 1810. at Throgs Neck, the town of Westchester, Westchester County, New York. Lindley married Caroline Murray on 31 May 1836 at the New York Monthly Meeting.¹ 17 September 1850, Lindley and Caroline listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Montgomery, Orange County, New York. Enumerated in this household were Lindley M. Ferris [39 New York farmer], Caroline [37 New York], Lindley M. [12 New York]. Robert M. [9 New York], Gertrude [6 New York], Caroline [1 New York].² Lindley's wife, Caroline, died on 30 October 1852 in Montgomery leaving him a widower. Lindley married Mary Murray 12th day of the 4th month 1854 at the New York Monthly Meeting, New York.³ 21 August 1860, Lindley and Mary listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Montgomery, Orange County, New York. Enumerated in this household were Lindley M. Ferris [49 New York], Mary M [43 New York], Gertrude C [14 New York], William S [10 New York], William S [10 New York], Mary M [5 New York], Elizabeth C [3 New York] & domestics Susan Reeve [40 Irleland], Agnes [10 Ireland], Mary Ferguson [35 Ireland], Rachel Smith [20 New York]; Farm laborers: James Ferguson [35 Ireland] & Wiilliam Purdy [30 New York]. The value of their real estate was $18,000 and personal property $2,600.⁴ Lindley died the 1st day of the 3rd month 1872 at Jacksonville, Duval County, Flordia, at age 61 years, 3 months and 16 days. He was buried at Poughkeepsie in the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. His tombstone reads: Lindley Murray Ferris - Born at Throgs Neck NW 11th mo. 15th 1810 - Died at Jacksonville Fla. 3rd mo. 1st 1872.⁵ His will was probated on 20 May 1872 at Dutchess County, New York.
