Robert was a shipping merchant. 1870, Robert and his wife, Mary, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Flushing, Queens County, Long Island, New York. Funeral services will be held at his late residence, Poughkeepsie on Saturday March 21, at 3:30 o'clock. Carriages will meet trains leaving New York at 12:50 and 1 p.m. New York Daily Tribune - Friday, March 20, 1903.

He was buried on 21 March 1903 at Poughkeepsie in the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. The inscription on his tombstone read: Robert Murray Ferris - BORN 5, Mo. 5, 1840 - DIED 3, Mo. 19, 1903.4
