Sarah was born in 1817 in New York. Sarah married Noah Townsend Carpenter, son of Townsend Carpenter and Elizabeth Truesdell, before 1853 in Veteran, Chemung County, New York. They went to California about 1853. When Noah died, he had no living children. 12 August 1870, Noah and Sarah was listed on the U.S. Federal Census at Sacramento, Sacramento County, California. Enumerated in this household were Sarah Avery [35 ---], Noah Carpenter [54 New York], Sarah [53 New York] and others. Noah is a painter.2 Sarah departed this life after May 1876 in Sacramento, Sacramento County, California. She was living at the time of the writng of the Whitney book.
