Daniel was born on the Isle of Bute, Scotland. In November of 1666, Daniel's five sons left the Isle of Bute in an open boat during a driving snow storm. They were escaping religious persecution at the hands of the English Sectarians. The brothers landed near the Giant's Causway, County Antrim, Ireland.
