John Wright was born on Thursday, 5 January 1826 in Westchester County, New York, at the family home at 23 Rose. He married Mary Elizabeth Huggins on 8 April 1851 at the Trinity Church, New Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut, by Dr. Cromwell at 12:30 pm. 18 July 1860, John and his wife, Mary, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Morrisania, Westchester County, New York. Enumerated in this household were John W. Leggett [34 New York - broker], his wife: Mary E. [33 Connecticut], daughter, Fanny [8 New York].4 He made his will 5 April 1885. Leaves all his estate to his wife, Mary E. Huggins. Executors; brother Francis148-g6Le7 W. Leggett, and son-in-law, David F. Porter. Record of probate gives a list of "survivors" as: widow, Mary E; daughters Fannie152-g7Le7 M. Porter, Emily153-g7Le7 (Emilie) S. Leggett, Anna154-g7Le7 B. Leggett, Mary155-g7Le7 H. Leggett, Margaret156-g7Le7 W. Leggett. This would indicate that the eldest daughter, Fannie152-g7Le7, was the only one married at that date, 1888. FELL DEAD INTO HIS ARMS.
Among the first persons to go over the new toboggan slide at Fleetwood Park yesterday was John W. Leggett, of the firm of Porter & Co., real estate dealers at 71 East One Hundred and Twenty-fifth-street. When Mr. Leggett reached the foot of the slide, on his second trip, he complained of feeling ill and was helped from his toboggan by Frank Hardy. He was given a glass of brandy, which seemed to revive him, and he was about to ascend the slide again when he staggered and fell into the arms of Mr. Hardy. In a few minutes he died. Coroner Nugent gave a permit for the removal of the body, and it was taken to Mr. Leggett's home at 77 West One Hundred and Twenty-sixth-street, where it was found that death was caused by paralysis of the heart. The death of John W. Leggett has cast a gloom over the road in many places, particularly among those who frequent Quinn's Stables on East One Hundred and twenty-fifth-street. Mr. Leggett was one of the oldest of the road-goers, and was known and liked by all of them. Since the death of Shepherd F. Knapp, which occurred a year ago yesterday, none of their number has died who will be more missed. The funeral will take place at 10 A. M. to-morrow from his home, 71 West One Hundred and Twenty-sixth-street. [handwritten: 1887]

He was buried at Bronx, Westchester County, New York, in the Woodlawn Cemetery. His will was probated on 12 January 1888.
