Mary Jasne [King] Mapes
     Mary Jane was born on Thursday, 4 February 1813 in the Town of Wallkill, Orange County, New York. Mary Jane married Samuel Addison Mapes, son of Nathaniel Mapes and Elizabeth Miller, on 1 January 1831 in Calhoun, Orange County, New York. The 1840 U.S. Federal Census enumerates at the Town of Wallkill, Orange County, New York, the family of Samuel A. Mapes [120001:000001].1 26 July 1850, Mary and her husband, Samuel, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in the Town of Wallkill. Enumerated in this household were Samuel A. Mapes [41 New York], his wife: Mary J. [36 New York], children: Horace [18 New York], John E. [16 New York], & Charles D. [11 New York].2 Samuel came to Michigan with his family on the 15th of March 1854, first settling in Washtenaw County. He later removed to the town of Iosco in Livingston County. He purchased property in Sections 6, 8, & 28 of Iosco - the last purchased in 1852. 20 June 1860, Mary and her husband Samuel were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Iosco Township, Livingston County, Michigan. Enumerated in this household were Samuel A. Mapes [50 New York], his wife, Mary Jane [47 New York], son, Charles D. [21 New York], Mary E. Bishop [23 New York], & farm laborer, Patrick Sedward [30]. His real estate was valued at $3,000 and his personal property at $1,000. [Sheet 57, line 39]3 25 August 1870, Mary and her husband, Samuel were listed on the U.S. Federal Census living in the home of their son at Iosco Township. Enumerated in this household were Horace Mapes [38 New York], his wife: Mary J. [35 Michigan], children: Willie H. [15 Michigan], Alice J. [14 Michigan], farm laborer: George Hudson [24 England], father: Samuel Mapes [60 New York], mother: Mary J. [57 New York], grandmother: Catherine Greenleaf [79 New York][retired].4 Mary's husband, Samuel, died on 17 October 1877 in Iosco Township leaving her a widow.5 1 June 1880, the U.S. Federal Census listed Mary living in the home of her son at Iosco Township. Enumerated in this household were Horace Mapes [48 New York], his wife: Mary J. [45 Michigan], his mother, Mary J. Mapes [67 New York], son, William H. [25 Michigan], daughter-in-law, Mary F. [27 Michigan].6 Mary departed this life on Friday, 29 July 1898 in Iosco Township at age 85 years, 5 months and 25 days.7 She was buried at Unadilla Township in the Plainfield Village Cemetery. The inscriptin on her tombstone reads: In Memory of Mrs. S. A. Mapes died July 29. 1898 aged 85 yrs. 5 mos. & 25 ds.8,9
