Sarah Maria married Charles Dubois Mapes, son of Samuel Addison Mapes and Mary Jane King, on 1 January 1861 in Livingston County, Michigan. Courtlandt Sweet] & Gladys [10/05/1881]. 25 August 1870, Sarah and her husband, Charles, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Iosco Township, Livingston County, Michigan. Enumerated in this household were Charles D. Mapes [31 New York], his wife: Sarah M. [28 Michigan], children: George A. [6 Michigan], Samuel A. Dist. 182, sheet 1, line 8]2 7 June 1900, Sarah and her husband, Charles, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Iosco Township. Enumerated in this household were Charles D. Mapes [61 New York-December 1838 ], his wife, Sarah M. [58 Michigan-Dec. 1841], children: Syrenus [30 Michigan-July 1869], Gladis [18 Michigan-October 1881], daughter-in-law, Anna B. [29 Michigan-February 1871], & border, James Farrell [22 Michigan-May 1870] Syrenus & Anna had been married 10 years with no children. Charles & Sarah had been married 38 years with 7 children 6 living.3 12 April 1910, Sarah and her husband, Charles, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census living in the home of their daughter at Iosco Township. Enumerated in this household were Cortland E. Sweet [36 Michigan], his wife: Susie S. [35 Michigan], children: Mapes D. [11 Michigan], Charles H. [3 Michigan], Bertus W. [1 1/2 Michigan], father-in-law: Charles D. Mapes [71 New York], & mother-in-law: Sarah [68 Michigan], Charles & Sarah had been married 48 years with 7 children 6 living. Cortland & Susie had been married 13 years with 3 children all living.4 Sarah's husband, Charles, died on 2 November 1919 in Iosco Township leaving her a widow.5 Sarah departed this life on Thursday, 5 January 1939 in Iosco Township at age 97 years and 14 days.
Obituary - Mrs. Sarah Mapes, 97, oldest native resident of Livingston county, died Thursday at her home north of Plainfield. She had resided in the same house for the past 76 years.
Formerly Sarah Abbott, she was born Dec. 22, 1841 in a log cabin near Wood's Corners. In 1860 she was married to C.D. Mapes, who died in 1919. She is survived by three sons: Samuel A. Mapes of Lakeland, Fla., Fred C. Mapes of Jackson, and C.E. Mapes of Okemos; two daughters, Mrs. Gladys Wright of New York and Mrs. C.E. Sweet of Plainfield; 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Robert Sweet of Sylvan township is a grandson on Mrs. Mapes. Funeral Services were held a 2:00 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Plainfield Methodist Church, Rev. W.W. Camburn of Stockbridge officiating. Interment was at Plainfield Cemetery. Those from Chelsea who attended the services were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sweet and Family, Mr. and Mrs. Gottlieb Bollinger, Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Grieb, Mrs. Lydia Davis and Mrs. H. L. Paul.6
She was buried there in the Plainfield Village Cemetery on Sunday, 8 January 1939.7,8
