Peter was born in Winwick Parish, Lancastershire, England. He was christened there on 14 August 1604 in the ancient Parish Church.1 Peter made his will on 13 March 1654.
In the name of God Amen, I Peter Kenion of Haydock in the parish of Winwick in the County of Lancaster Yeoman being at the present sick and weak in body but of good and perfect memory praise be to God for the same. And well knowing the uncertain estate of this life and that all flesh must yield unto death, whom it shall please God to call. Do therefore ordayne, constitute and appoint my last Will and Testament in manner and forme following. And first and principally I commend my soule into the hands of Almighty God my only maker and redeemer in whom is all my hope of salavation and my body committed to the earth from whence it came to be buried according to the directions of my friends and Executors hereafter named.
And for and concerning such outward estate (that is to say) Now lying Messuages and Tenements situate and being in Haydock aforesaid, but also the rest aforesaid other Tenement situate and being in Winwick aforesaid in the said Countie, with an amount of tarke of ground in Winwick aforesaid, late in occupation of Henry Brotherton als (alias) Cooke . Soe likewise concerning such Goods, Chattels, Cattles, debts it hath pleased God to bestow on me in this life. It is my mind and will to dispose of in manner and form as hereafter followeth.
And first and concerning my said Messuages and Tenements in Haydock and the ground beneath the same belonging, together with the edifices, buildings and other so promised with the apertures named to the same belonging, together also unite all the right land tenants rights thereof. And after my decease unto Henry Kenion my second sonne and the lawful issue of his body to be begotten. And for the default of such issue then to Henry Kenion my second sonne and his assigns. And as concerning all and remaining said Good, Chattels and Cattles and debts it is my mynd and will that my debts and funeral expenses be fully discharged and paid out of the whole, that being done bequeath as followeth.
Imperis. I give and bequeath to Isabell my daughter one piece of gold of the value of four shillings and four pence in full discharge of all her child’s part, portion. Given on demand whenever after my decease. Item. It is my will & mind that my sonne-in-law James shall have one piece of silver valued fifteen shillings which was given to me by my Father-in-lawe.
Item. I give and bequeath unto my third youngest son Peter the sum of Eight Score pounds to be employed by my Executors in a lawful way to his benefit & profit.
Item. I give and bequeath unto James Kenion my eldest sonne a table and new bedstead standing at Ashton house, and all the hewed wood about and lying on the common before Haydock House.
Item. It is my will and mynd that the rest and residue of said goods, Chattels and Cattles and debts as above disregarding of my debt for funeral expenses and legacies beforementioned, I give to Henry Kenion my second son.
I do hereby constitute ordayne and make the said Henry Kenion my sonne and Thomas Rowlinson son of Peter my true and lawful Executors to execute perform and accomplish this my last Will and Testament and my trust and confidence in them assured.
Item. My loving friend Peter Lyon of Windle Yeoman and James Low of Haydock aforesaid Yeoman to be Overseers of this my last Will that the same be performed accomplished and done according to my mind as herein declared. For the better presenting and corroborating hereof. I have hereby put my hand and seale the thirtieth day of March in the year of our Lord God, according to the English computation One thousand Six Hundred and fifty-four. Peter Kenion
