James's wife, Rebecca, died on 5 November 1717 in Stratford, Fairfield County, Connecticut, leaving him a widower. He wrote a codicil to his will on 2 May 1718. He mentions the death of his wife, Rebecca. He gives to his daughters: Hannah Lewis, Sarah Chauncey & Phebe Lewis. James married 2nd Anne Wells on 22 October 1718 in Stratford, Fairfield County, Connecticut. She was 1st married 19 July 1687 to James Steele. James departed this life on Tuesday, 25 February 1721 in Stratford, Fairfield County, Connecticut. He was buried at Stratford, Fairfield County, Connecticut, in the Old Congregational Church Burying Ground. The inventory of James's estate was taken on Friday, 7 March 1721. Mrs Anne Judson agrees with his heirs as to what she should receive.
