     Theunis Nyssen was born in Utrecht, Utrecht Province, Netherlands.3 Theunis married Phoebe Jans Sales, daughter of John Sales and Phillipe Soales, on 11 February 1640 at the New Amsterdam Reformed Dutch Church in the City, County & State of New York. Phoebe was noted as being of Jarleston [probably Charlestown] & Theunis was of Bunninck [possibly Brunswick].4 He and Phoebe Jans were blessed with 8 children. Theunis departed this life before August 1663 in New York. He was buried in Flatbush.

[S538] Robert Jordan, Colonial Highways of Greater New York, page 86 - Further evidence of the existence of the Gowanus road during the Dutch days is provided by the record of a conveyance from Theunis Nyssen, farmer, to Adam Brouwer. Nyssen appeared before a notary public – Dirck Schelluyne –on April 1, 1654, and declared that he had conveyed to Brouwer the following:
         “Certain parcell of Bushland (woodland) limeting Easterly after (in the rear) his house and land broad 45 rods (351 ft 3 in)proceeding to the highway (probably the old road from Gowanus to Brooklyn and his land so far in the Bush (woods) as ye patent of Theunis Nyssen doth contain (exend), etc”
