William Holmes1

M, b. 1681, d. before 27 March 1741
     William was born in 1681 in England. He was the son of Edward Holmes & Martha Skeys. William married Mary Pottenger, daughter of John Pottenger and Mary Mill, on 8 May 1711 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.2 William and Mary had children: Mary [ 1712][m. 1/06/1736 Otho Brashears & 2nd. Morris Brashears], Edward 7/21/1713], John, William, Clara [m. 8/05/1737 Peter MacKean], Sarah, Jemima, Verlinda, Rachel, Elizabeth & Phoebe. The birth order of these children is not known. William made his will on 27 October 1740.

In the name of God Amen The October 27th In the year of our Lord 1740 I William Holmes of Prince Georges County in the Province of Maryland being Sick in Body but of Sound & Perfect memory praise be to God for the Same & knowing the uncertainty of this Mortall Life Being therefore Desirous to Settle all things in Order do make this my Last Will & Testament in manner & Form following Viz:t first and Principally I Commend my Soul to Almighty God my Creator assuredly Believing that I shall Receive full pardon & Remission of all my Sins and be Saved by the Precious Death & Merits of my Blessed Savior Jesus Christ & my Body to th Earth from whence it was taken to be buried in Such Decent Manner as to my Executors hereafter named shall be thought moot & Convenient and as Touching Such Worldly Estate as the Lord in Mercy hath Lent me my Will and meaning is ye Same to be Imployed as hereafter by this my Last Will is Expressed & first Revoking & Renouncing all Wills by me formerly made I Declare this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following:
Item I give and bequeath unto my Beloved Wife Mary Holmes the third part of my Personal Estate when my just Debts are all paid and funeral Charges
Item I Give and bequeath unto my Eldest son Edward Holmes my tract of Land called “William & Mary” Lying upon the Long Draft of the Eastern Branch and also the Sum of one pound Current money
Item I Give and bequeath unto my Son John Holmes one Hundred & fifty acres of my Tract of Land Called “Wolfs Harbour” & the Addition to Wolfs Harbour being by Bond due to him & fifty Acres beside of ye Said Tract & ye: Addition to be Cut of the upper End of ye said Tract & also one Good feather Bed & Furniture
Item I Give and bequeath unto my Son William Holmes two Hundred Acres of my said Tract of Land Called “Wolfs Harbour” & the Addition to be Cut of the upper end of the said Tract & also ye: Sum of Ten Pounds Current money & a Cow Big with Calf.
Item I Give and bequeath to my Eldest Daughter Mary Brashear ye Sum of five Shillings Current Money
Item I Give and bequeath unto my Daughter Clara McClean the Sum of one pound Currant money
Item I Will also that my Personal Estate after my Just debts & funeral Expenses are paid to be Equally divided Between my Six Other Daughters Sarah Jemmima Verlinda Rachel Elizabeth & Febe Holmes
Item I also will that if my Son William Holmes dies before he Comes of age of one and twenty years without Issue that his part of the said Tract of Land Called “Wolfs Harbour” & Addition to “Wolfs Harbour” to be Equally Divided Between his other Brothers Edward & John Holmes
Item I Likewise Constitute my Dear & Loveing Wife Mary Holmes & also my son John Holmes to be Joynt Executors & Administrators
