Reginaldus le Fowler

     It is thought that the earliest ancestor of the Fowler family is a Richard le Fowler who came to England, as did most of the Normans that left the mainland for the isle, with William the Conqueror in 1066. There has been noted a line of descent from the Norman knight down to the Sir Richard Fowler who went with Richard the Lion Heart to the Holy Lands in 1190. However, there is scant evidence of this lineage. Sir Richard served as commanding officer of bowmen who were tenants of his manor and maintained them at his own expense. Personally, he saved the camp from a nocturnal surprise attack. For his outstanding vigilance in deterring the attack, he received the honor of knighthood in the field from his royal commander, Richard the Lion Heart Plantaganet, Richard caused Fowler’s crest to be changed to a vigilant owl. This Sir Richard is the anestor of Raginaldius.1,2 Reginaldus was born circa 1245 probably at Shryvenham, Berkshire, England. Reginaldis resided at Shryvenham. is the first one of the line that can be definitely located.1 Reginaldus departed this life in the 29th year of Edward I [1301] in Shryvenham, Berkshire, England.3
