James Cornish

     James was born circa 1568 in Tiverton, Devonshire, England.1 He was first married to a woman whose name is unknown. They had children: Diana [chr. 8/00/1603][m. Mr. Chilcott], James [chr. 3/23/04/05-4/07/1605], James [6/07/1606][m. Dorothy [Wood] Prouze] & Alice [1/13/1610/11][m. Aquila Skinner]. James married 2nd Sarah Beryman on 26 December 1611 in Tiverton at St. Peter's Church.2 James and Sarah had children: John [chr. 9/27/1612], Elizabeth [3/08/1613/14][m. 5/03/132 Richard Crudge], Sarah [chr. 12/251615][m. Peter Atkins], Agnes [chr. 10/29/1617], George [1619-11/10/1619], Mary [chr. 10/31/1621][m. Kingwell], George [chr. 10/09/1623] & Isabell [chr. 11/08/1625][m. Henry Atkins].3 James made his will on 31 August 1633.

In his will, James requests to be buried in the churchyard of the parish church of Tiverton aforesaid as close as possible to the place where his first wife was buried. He makes bequests to his wife Sarah, sons George [the youngest], and John, daughters Sara, Mary, Agnes, and Isabell [the youngest daughter], all the previous six unmarried. He mentioned what he had given his daughter Dianah Chilcott at her marriage, and daughter Alice Skinner. Wife Sarah was execuitrix, and sons James Cornish, John Cornish, and George Cornish and son-in-law Aquila Skinner were named overseers. Signed James Cornish Senior. Witnesses: Henry Crosman, John Jennings, and Henry ______.2,4

He wrote a codicil to his will on 3 June 1635.

He described himself as a clothier naming sons James and John Cornish, son-in-law Aquila Skinner and Richard Crudge, “all his grandchildren” [unnamed], and brother George Cornish of London and his wife [unnamed].He also named Andrew Speed, Sr. and his wife [unnamed], John Cornish the Elder, George Cornish the elder, Mary Hollings the wife of Mark Hollings, Richard More, [Amy?] Horsey wife of Stephen Horsey, Dorothie Alred wife of Thomas Alred, Jaine Hagley. The codicil was witnessed by James Cornish, Jr., Aquila Skynner, John Funse?, and William Skynner.4

James departed this life in Tiverton. He was buried there in St. Peter's Churchyard on Monday, 30 July 1635.5 His will was probated on 12 November 1635.
