Humphrey (?)1,2

M
Humphrey was born in France. Humphrey married Ada (?). It has been assumed that Humphrey was Ada's husband. It is known that Ada is the mother of Alexander and that he [Alexander] was raised by his uncle, Roger of Salisbury. It is also known that Roger had a brother Humphrey. Thus, Humphrey could be the husband of Ada or if Roger had other brothers, then any of the brothers could be a possible husband of Ada, the mother of Alexander.

  1. [S758] Edward J Kealey, Roger of Salisbury, Viceroy of England, page 272 - HUMPHREY was Bishop Roger's brother. He was mentioned only once, as a witness to a charter the bishop issued in Wales in 1114. Alexander of Lincoln was called Roger's nephew through Roger's brother. Bishop Alexander's mother was named ADA. Her name was given in the Lincoln obit book, and in 1130 she was pardoned thirty shillings for lands in Winford, Dorset. Although Roger could have had more than one brother, Ada was probably Humphrey's wife.
  2. [S760] David M Smith and others, English Episcopal Acta Ely 1109-1197, Page lxxiii - Nigel’s familial connexions are easy to identify. He was commonly described as nepos of Roger, bishop of Salisbury. A contrast can be seen here between descriptions of Nigel and those of Alexander, later bishop of Lincoln, also nepos of Roger of Salisbury. Alexander’s parents were Humphrey, the brother of Bishop Roger of Salisbury, and Humphrey’s wife Ada. Other siblings of Roger of Salisbury can not now be identified, and Nigel and Alexander are never described as brothers. The identity and of Nigel's parents and his exact relationship to Roger of Salisbury, can thus only be left as open questions.
