Richard de was born in 1094 in England. Richard married Adelize de Meschines of Chester, daughter of Ranulph de Meschines and Margaret de Lupus d'Avranches, circa 1114. One of the land holdings granted to Richard was the Lordship of Ceredigion in Wales where he at times maintained his residence. A revolt against Norman rule had begun in south Wales, and on 1 January 1136 the Welsh won a victory over the local Norman forces. Richard was not at his lordship at the time, but his wife, Adelize was staying there. Upon returning to the borders of Wales in April of that year, he ignored warnings of the danger and pressed on towards Ceredigion with only a small force. He had not gone far when he was ambushed by the men of Gwent. Richard was killed on Wednesday, 15 April 1136.
