Emma Kay Carter

     Emma Kay was born on Tuesday, 7 September 1880 in Maine. She was the daughter of Augustus & Abigail "Abbie" [Nickerson] Carter. She often went by the nick name, Jimmy. Emma Kay married Augustus Wright Leggett, son of William Haight Leggett and Anna Beardslee, on 7 June 1902 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah.¹ Gus was a short man & wore a size six shoe. Jimmy was a tall woman about six foot. Augustus & Emma had two daughters - Elizabeth "Betty" [11/29/1905-12/16/1991][m. 6/27/1930 William Henrichsen Neff] & Dorothy [12/10/1909-12/30/1999]. 23 April 1910, Emma and her husband, Augustus, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Salt Lake City at 1 Kuster Terrace. Enumerated in this household were Augustus Leggett [40 Maryland], his wife: Emma K. [30 Maine], daughters: Elizabeth [4 Utah] & Dorothy [4/12 Utah]. They had been married 7 years with 2 children, both living. Augustus is a salesman of wholesale liquors.² 5 January 1920, Emma and her husband, Augustus, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Salt Lake City at 376 5th Avenue. Enumerated in this household were A. W. Leggett [47 Michigan], his wife: Emma [37 Maine], daughters: Elizabeth [14 Utah] & Dorothy [10 Utah], along with W. D. Mallon [34 Missouri], Adelaide [29 Kansas] & William L. [4 5/12 Missouri]. A. W. is a salesman for a candy company.³ 4 April 1930, Emma and her husband, Augustus, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Salt Lake City at 425 Eighth Avenue. Enumerated in this household were Augustus W. Leggett [58 Michigan], his wife: Emma K. [47 Maine], daughters: Elizabeth [24 Utah] & Dorothy [20 Utal], father-in-law: Augustus R. Carter [77 Maine], & mother-in-law: Abbie N. Carter [77 Maine].⁴ 16 April 1940, Emma and her husband, Augustus, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, at 1819 North Kingsley Drive. Enumerated in this household were Agustus Leggett [69 Michigan], his wife: Emma [57 Maine].
The highest grade completed: Augustus was 8th grade & Emma completed 2 years of college. They were living at the same place in 1935. They were renting at $43 per month.⁵ Emma's husband, Augustus, died on 3 December 1944 in Los Angeles leaving her a widow.⁶ Emma departed this life on Sunday, 26 July 1964 in Millcreek, Salt Lake County, Utah, at age 83 years, 10 months and 19 days. She was buried there in Millcreek in Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
