     John was born on Tuesday, 24 December 1652 in New Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut.1 John married Mercy Todd circa 1675 in New Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut.2 John & Mercy had children: Mercy [12/15/1677-2/09/1756] [m. Benjamin Miller], Hannah [10/03/1679-1/22/1766] [m. 1710 Ebernezer Mansfield], Sarah [6/03/1682-1771] [m. 1/16/1702 Daniel Bradley & 2nd 11/27/1723 Isaac Johnson], Lydia [1685-1/04/1739] [m. 12/23/1703 Stephen Munson],Abigail [3/15/1688-7/04/1743] [m. Phinehas Clark], John [7/111691-3/27/1757] [m. 1716 Elizabeth Thompson], Joseph [1694-dy], Rebecca [3/14/1695-10/30/1732] [m. 1714 William Whitmore] & Joseph [12/15/1697-10/31/1761] [m. Hannah Byington]. John departed this life on Thursday, 8 February 1713/14 in New Haven at age 61 years, 1 month and 15 days. He was buried at New Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut, in the Center Church Cemetery on the Green. The inscription on his tombstone reads: Here Lyeth the Body of Cap. John Bassett who died Feb 8 1714 aged 61 years. In 1821 the stone was removed to Grove Street Cemetery, it is unlikely that the body was removed.3
