Matilda Townsend

     Matilda was born on Wednesday, 8 January 1806 in Greenville, Greene County, New York. Matilda married Isaac Cox circa 1835 in West Somerset, Niagara County, New York. 12 July 1850, Matilda and her husband, Isaac, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Somerset Town. Enumerated in this household were Isaac Cox [42 Pennsylvania], his wife: Matilda [43 New York], children: Felnutha [14 New York], Ann [8 New York], Luther A. [7 New York], Mary M. [4 New York], & George [2 New York].¹ 24 July 1860, Matilda and her husband Isaac were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Somerset Town. Enumerated in this household were Isac Cox [53 Pennsylvania], his wife: Matilda [54 New York], children: Ann M. [18 New York], Mary M. [14 New York], & George [13 New York].² Matilda departed this life on Saturday, 19 October 1867 in Somerset Town at age 61 years, 9 months and 11 days. Her husband is listed on the 1870 U.S. Census with a different wife. She was buried there in West Somerset Cemetery. The inscription on her tombstone reads: Matilda wife of Isaac Cox - Died Oct. 19 1867.³
