Deborah Townsend

     Deborah was born on Friday, 31 March 1797 in Greene County, New York. Deborah married Philander Hopkins circa 1821 in New York. Philander & Deborah had children: Marilda [1834], Philander [1837 New York] & several others. 7 August 1850, Deborah and her husband, Philander, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Unadilla Township, Livingston County, Michigan. Enumerated in this household were Philander Hopkins [56 Vermont], his wife: Deboah [53 New York], children: Marilda [16 New York], Philander [13 New York], & laborer: Hiriam Dray [34 New York].¹ 5 June 1860, Deborah listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Unadilla Township, Livingston County, Michigan. Enumerated in this household were Philander Hopkins [67 Vermont], his wife: Deborah [63 New York], children: Philander [23 New York], Enulius W. [10 New York], farm laborer: Aulliville J. Titus [35 New York], Alpheus C. Titus [5 Michigan], & Martha N. Titus [25 New York].² Deborah's husband, Philander, died on 20 April 1861 in Unadilla Township leaving her a widow. 12 August 1870, the U.S. Federal Census listed Deborah living in the home of her son at Unadilla Township. Enumerated in this household were Philander Hopkins [33 New York], Emeline [25 New York], Sarah [3 Michigan], James A. [0/12 Michigan], & Deborah Hopkins [73 New York][retired].³ Deborah died on Tuesday, 28 May 1872 in Unadilla Township at age 75 years, 1 month and 28 days of inflamation of the bowels.⁴ She was buried there in the Williamsville Cemetery.⁵
