Answer: Anything in regard to Luther after 1850 would be on file at Bath, Steuben Co., NY. Abel is named in his father's (Thomas) will written 15 Dec., 1800 and pro-bated 2 July, 1802. Thomas' obit appeared in the POUGHKEEPSIE JOURNAL 16 March, 1802 saying he died in his 72nd yr. Abel had brother's Silvanus and Hosea and sisters with no names given. Rachel, the widow, was still alive in 1810 with one female over 45 in her household. The lineage runs Thomas, Jr.5; Thomas, John, Thomas, John.
  3. [S458] Martha J. Burke, Townsends: Dutchess County, New York [Part II], V. THOMAS TOWNSEND, JR. - Born ca 1730, died 16 March, 1802 at Frederick,
Dutchess County, N.Y. in his 72nd year. (Poughkeepsie Journal of 30 March, 1802). He is not on the 1777 Dutchess County tax list or on the Revolutionary War Rolls, and perhaps lived across the line in North Salem also at that time. In 1790, he was in rederick (134) and in Frederick also in 1800. On 15 December, 1800 he made his will at
Frederick, probated on 2 July, 1802 naming his wife Rachel, and sons, Silvanus, Hosea and Abel. (Dutchess County Abstract of Wills 3:22). The widow Rachel, was still living at Frederick in 1810 with a household of one female over 45 years of age. The ELISHA COLE GENEALOGY, page 33, identifies her as Rachel Sunderlin (Sunderland). In addition to the three sons named in Thomas' Will (of whom Abel was actually the oldest) the census indicates that there were several daughters but their names are unknown. (Macy).
