Sarah Baker

F, d. before 28 December 1676
     Sarah was born. She was the daughter of Humphrey Baker. Sarah married Reverend Zachariah Symmes, son of Reverend William Symmes and Mary (?), on 13 August 1622 in Southwark, County Surrey, England, at St. Saviour's.1 On 1 August 1634, Sarah & her husband, Zachariah, left their home in England aboard the ship, "Griffin", bound for New England. Listed among the 200 passengers were Reverend Zachariah Symmes, his wife Sarah, William, Mary, Elizabeth, Huldah, Hannah, Rebecca, including William & Ann Hutchinson and John Lathrop. Many of of these immigrants became leaders in the colony. They arrived on the 18th of September at Boston..2,3 Sarah's husband, Zachariah, died on 4 February 1670/71 in Charlestown leaving her a widow.4 Sarah made her will on 28 October 1676.

I doe freely give and resigne my soul into the hands of my blessed Creator and Redeemer, desiring for the merit of Christ alone to be accepted, and desire with thankfulness to ackkowledge his grace for that measure of assurance thereof which hee hath vouchsafed unto mee. And for that temporall Estate which I have which is onely fifty pound, which my husband in his last will and Testament gave me liberty to dispose of as I saw good, I do dispose and give as followeth
     I do give unto my son Zachary Simms fifteen pounds.
     I do give to my grandchild Margaret Prout ten pounds.
     I give to my son Timothy Siimms seven pounds.
     I give unto my grandchild Margaret Davis five pounds.
     I give to my grandchild Hannah Davis five pounds.
The remaining eight pounds I give to my son William Simms, to my son John Broke and to his wife, to my son Zachary Simms and to his wife , to my son Timothy Simms and to his wife, to my son Thomas Savage and to his wife, to my son Timothy Prout and to his wife, to my son Humphrey Booth, to my son Edward Willies and his wife, to each an equal part for to buy each of them a Ring, which I desire them to accept as a token of my love, I not having farther to give unto them.
Thomas Savage and Edward Willis were Executors.5

      Sarah departed this life in Charlestown. Her will was probated on 28 December 1676 at Charlestown, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. Found on record in the Suffolk Registry, vol. vi. Fol. 145. It was proved Dec. 28, 1676.5
