     Ludwig was born on Wednesday, 2 February 1780 in Strausburg, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Ludwig married Rebecca (?) circa 1802. Lugwig and Rebecca had children: Solomon [11/25/1803-1866][m. Catherine Bordner [6/16/1811-1868]], Samuel [5/16/1805-9/03/1866][m. Elizabeth Schmeltz [2/16/1800-12/12/1874]], Moses [7/09/1809-1/04/1873][m. Elizabeth Salada], Catherine [1/19/1812] & others. These children were baptized at Hoffman Church. The 1810 U.S. Federal Census enumerates the family of Ludwig Shofstall [11010:00010].2 The 1820 U.S. Federal Census enumerates at Gratz Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, the family of Ludwig Shofstall [130010:10010].3 Ludwig married Elizabeth (?) circa 1827. Ludwig and Elizabeth had children: Lewis Henry [5/21/1828-3/23/1859][m. Maria Mater [2/20/1826-2/26/1877]], Albert Philip[12/22/1830-6/16/1902][m. Elizabeth Minnich [7/02/1831-8/02/1885] & 2nd. 4/03/1886 Susan Lehman [10/10/1837-3/00/1918]], Joseph A. [1833][m. Sarah Robards]. The 1830 U.S. Federal Census enumerates at Gratz Township the family of Ludwig Imshofstal [11002001:101201].4 On May 1, 1830, Ludwig received a court order to sell goods in order to pay debts owed to his sister Eva Buffington. His house was sold to Andrew Schreck [son-in-law of Eva] for $201, he being the highest bidder. Ludwig remained on the premises as a tenant. Then in 1836, after Eva became a widow, Andrew sold the property to Eva. After the sale,Ludwig rented a house owned by Henry Hoffman until around the year 1842, when Ludwig left Gratz, to move to Frailey Township in Schuykill County. At that time he anglicized his name to Lewis. 15 October 1850, Ludwig and his wife, Elizabeth, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Frailey Township, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. Enumerated in this household were Luas Shofstal [72 Pennsylvania], Elizabeth [61 Pennsylvania], Henry [22 Pennsylvania], Philip [19 Pennsylvania] & Joseph [17 Pennsylvania].5 June 1860, Ludwig and his wife, Elizabeth, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Frailey Township. Enumerated in this household were Ludwig Shoffstall [81 Pennsylvania], Elizabeth [ 69 Pennsylvania], Joseph [23 Pennsylvania], Sarah [21 Pennsylvania] & Lizzie [3 Pennsylvania]. Ludwig is a laborer and Joseph is a miner. Ludwig has real estate valued at $300. Ludwig and Joseph each have personal property valued at $100.6 Ludwig departed this life on Saturday, 2 March 1861 in Frailey Township, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, at age 81 years and 1 month. He was buried there in Donaldson Cemetery.
