John Scoos II

     John was born circa 1450 in Devonshire, England. On 14 September 1470, his father gav him land in preparation for his intended marriage to Joan Horswyll. These lands were at Modbury called Brownston. John married Joan Horswyll after 14 September 1470 in Devonshire, England. John was deeded Traine Manor, 10 May 1489. John's wife, Joan, died after 7 March 1513 in the Trayne Manor, Modbury, Devonshire, England, leaving him a widower. John married 2nd Agnes (?) circa 1515. John departed this life on Thursday, 5 August 1520 in Modbury, Devonshire, England, at the Trayne Manor. Inguisition Post Mortem of John Scoos - dated: 24 December 13 Henry VIII [1521] at Exeter, Devonshire - Inspeximus of inquisition post mortem of John Scoos, tenant-in-chief of Trewyn in the parish of Modbury held 24 December 1521. John Scoos was seized of and in 24 burgages and 2 acres meadowland with appurtenances in the borough of Modbury in his demesne as of fee on the day he died. And further he was seized of and in one tenement 60 acres land 10 acres meadowland 10 acres woodland 20 acres pasture and 20 acres gorse and heath with appurtenances in Modbury called Brownston in his demesne as of fee and, being so seized, by a document of 24 September 1470 he enfeoffed William Fowhill, John Pownde, clerk, and Thomas Smyth to the use of John Scoos, junior, and Joan Horswyll then his wife. And further he was seized of and in one messuage 40 acres land 5 acres pasture 1 acre woodland and 10 acres meadow with appurtenances in Spriddlescombe in the same parish and of and in one acre land with appurtenances lying in Yearnescombe in the same parish, and of and in 30 acres land and 2 acres woodland with appurtenances in Radlegh and Burne in the parish of Aveton Gifford in his demesne as of fee and, being so seized, enfeoffed Roger Rous, Robert Ford of East Leigh, John Hyll, senior, of Penquit by a charter dated 7 March 1513 to the use of John Scoos, senior, for life without any impeachment of waste and after to Joan his wife for the term of her life and after to John Scoos of Milton son and heir of John Scoos, senior, and the lawful heirs begotten by John Scoos, junior. And further he was seized of and in one tenement 30 acres land 1 acre meadow 2 acres woodland, and 4 acres garden with appurtenances in Trewyn in the parish of Modbury aforesaid and of and in one tenement in the borough of Modbury aforesaid and of 8 acres land, 1 acre meadow and 2 acres aldergroves with appurtenances in Aylston next to Modbury in his demesne as of fee and, being so seized, enfeoffed a John Wakeham, junior, John Phelip of Carse, Nicholas Polyblanke, William Mareage and Robert Drake to hold to the use of John Scoos, senior, for the term of his life and after to the use of Agnes his then surviving wife and her assigns for the term of her life and for one whole year after the death of the said Agnes 40 shillings to be paid annually at the four feasts of the year to the aforesaid John Scoos of Milton, his son and Joanna his wife during the term of her life. And further the said 24 burgages and 2 acres meadow with appurtenances in the borough of Modbury are held of Philip Champernowne, knight as of his borough of Modbury aforesaid in his socage and for the rent of 5s 1d per annum and are worth in all their outgoings 16 shillings per annum. And that the aforesaid tenements lands etc in Brownston are held of the Abbot of Buckfastleigh in free socage and for the rent of 16s 2½d per annum and are worth in all their outgoings 40 shillings per annum And that the aforesaid messuages etc in Spriddlescombe are held of Robert Hyll, knight as of his manor of Spriddlescombe in free socage and for the rent of 4s 6d per annum. And that the lands and woods with appurtenances in Radlegh are held of Simon Coyte and John Somaster and John Weryng coparceners as of their manor of Bourne in free socage and for the rent of 11d per year and are worth in all their outgoings 25 shillings. And that the aforesaid lands etc in Trewyn are held of the Provost of Eton as of his manor of Modbury in free socage and for the rent of 10 shillings per annum and are worth in all their outgoings £4. And that the aforesaid lands etc aldergroves in Aylston are held of Robert Wylloughby, knight of Broke as of his manor of Woldbury in free socage and for the rent of 16d per annum and are worth in all their outgoings 20 shillings. And that the aforesaid John Scoos, senior, held no lands nor tenements of the Lord King in chief etc. And John Scoos, senior, died on 5 August 1520 and the aforesaid John Scoos, junior is his son and heir and is aged 50 years and more.¹
