John was born on Monday, 20 August 1691 in Upper Marborough, Calvert County, Maryland, at their plantation and family home called "Major's Lot". John married Sarah (?) circa 1718 in Maryland. John made his will on 18 March 1720.
In the name of God Amen. I John Pottenger Jun. of Prince Georges County in the Province of Maryland being sick of Body but of Sound and perfect mind & memory praise therefore be given to Almighty God I doe make Ordain this my present last Will & Testament in manner and form as followeth – that is to say first & principally I commend my Soul into the hands of Almighty God hoping through the mornith Death and Passion of my Savior Jesus Christ full & free & forgiveness of all my Sins & to inherit Everlasting Life & my Body to the Earth to be decently Buryed at the discretion of my well beloved wife Sarah Pottenger whom I doe name & appoint to be my administrator over my whole Estate & as Touching & disposing of all such temporall Estate which hath pleased Almighty God to bestow upon me – I give and bequeath thereof as followeth – Item It is my Will that all just Debts and funeral Charges shall be paid by my well beloved wife Sarah Pottenger whom I leave as above mentioned without any lawsuit or trouble – Item I give unto my well beloved wife Sarah Pottenger the half of my whole Estate both hear and in England to her & her heirs forever – Item I give to my child that my wife is now big with the other half of my Estate both heare and in England to that & the heirs forever – Item It is my Will that my administrator pay unto John Orme the Sum of three pounds Sterling – I doe leave and appoint my Father John Pottenger my Brother Richard Purnell my brothers Samuel & Robert Pottenger to see this my last Will & Testament performed. John departed this life in Maryland. His will was probated on 24 March 1720. John and Sarah had one daughter, Sarah, born posthumusly in 1720. She became the ward of her grandfather, John Pottenger. At his death, she became the ward of her uncle, Zephaniah Wade.4
