     John was born in Fairsted, County Essex, England. He was christened there on 16 February 1617 in St. Mary the Virgin Church.3 In 1632, he came to America with his Uncle James and his brother & sister to Newton, Massachusetts. He served in King Philip's War as a surgeon, and was the first physician in Norwich. He removed to Saybrook, where he was a "leather sealer" in 1656; he was at Mohegan (afterwards Norwich) in 1659, with a home lot near that of Thomas Adgate, his brother-in-law; in 1661 he is called a shoemaker there. He was made a freeman there in 1662. John married Elizabeth Adgate circa 1650. John made his will before 2 August 1686 at Connecticut.

His will was not dated. He was aged about 60 years. His wife, Elizabeth, was sole executrix. His servants to have liberty at the death of his wife.4

John departed this life on Friday, 2 August 1686 in Norwich, New London County, Connecticut. His will was probated on 22 September 1686.
